I recently read a quote that went something like:
“If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.”
I want to talk about something that everyone has! We experience a little for some, or a lot for others on a daily basis! Another ironic part to this incredible response is that it can actually save our lives!
Have you ever been in a parking lot at night? The hair on the back of your neck stands up, your heart starts to race, you walk very quickly to your car, your stomach in knots… When you get to your car you jump in really fast and lock the door! That response we all know is our anxiety! If there had of been a threat it would have primed your body to react and hopefully survive the threat!
Anxiety is a state of unease, apprehension, uncertainty-it occurs when we worry about an event or situation.
Good or bad anxiety, our body can’t tell the difference from say Christmas to a speech. Common symptoms of anxiety are:
- Chest pains
- Neck tension
- Stomach upset or nervous stomach (something a lot of children get)
- Pulsing in the ear
- Burning skin
- Fear of impending doom
- Shortness of breath
- Shooting spins in the face
- Heart palpitations
- Weakness in the legs
- Feeling like you are going crazy
- Sleep problems – too much or too little
- Unfortunately a lot more…..
We have talked about anxiety and what it does, we have talked about the why and how but what we haven’t chatted about is what can help it! As an Integrative Health specialist I promote Health and well being and when we are plagued by anxiety we are in an unhealthy state as this will cause immune dysfunction, disorders, inflammation and taxing of the central and anatomic nervous systems that can lead to a lot more serious conditions!
The anatomic nervous system ANS for short, helps with our flight or fight responses, think of your body like a grandfather clock with a large pendulum swinging one way or another. In one direction we have a fight or flight response, when engaged the heart beats faster, the respiratory system responds by allowing more oxygen and adrenaline kicks in for added strength. The other side is our digestion where everything slows down, heart rate, breathing, even our energy level goes down! This is to allow for full concentration on digesting that hamburger that we had at diner! The two systems work in tandem but very differently. In a state of constant anxiety the pendulum stops swinging and gets stuck.
A body therapy that has been proven to aid the body and its anatomic nervous system is Bowen Therapy! Bowen allows the pendulum to start swinging again allowing the ANS to function and homeostasis to return to the body. Bowen Therapy is a whole body therapy. It uses gentle muscle rolls and challenges, to effect the skin, muscle and fascia which has also been referred to as the bodies organizer because the fascia embraces all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and lastly muscles!
By effecting all these main systems total body healing can be achieved with Bowen Therapy!
Bowen Therapy has many different procedures that can target specific issues such as the stomach, both upper and lower respiratory, shoulders including the traps, legs, upper and lower back, along with the ever important Vegas nerve ( look for another blog about that, coming soon) and many more. Bowen Therapy allows the body to remember what it was like to be well, minimizing the effects felt from anxiety until the situation or event has passed. Because of this, Bowen Therapy is very effective when treating for anxiety disorders such as P.A.D panic attack disorder, G.A.D general ancient disorder, O.C.D. obsessive compulsive disorder, S.A.D social anxiety disorder, P.T.S.D post traumatic stress disorder.
Bowen can be partnered with counseling for these issues and disorders by minimizing symptoms, that distract from dealing with the underlying cause of the issue, helping to improve circulation, which makes medications more effective and also aids in detoxification and lastly lymphatic drainage.
There is much more information on the topic of Bowen Therapy and anxiety and how these two work together to assist in something that we have to deal with everyday!
When using Bowen Therapy for stress relief you are doing something, as I say to my clients:
That your future self will thank you for!!
REMEMBER – Sometimes when things are falling apart, they are actually falling into place!
